The story of David and Goliath will always be one of the greatest stories ever heard. I mean a little boy killing a giant. To top it all, he did it with a sling and a stone. Like how many times do you get to hear that? But there’s this part that really intrigues me every time. Let me take you back. So there was this giant called Goliath that had this full time job where all he did was to scare the Israelites with his talks. On the other hand, there was this boy called David who was a shepherd and was running errands for his father. He stumbled across the scene where Goliath was doing his daily work, which is scaring the Israelites. Fast forward, David said he can kill him, like the confidence in David is just wowing. So now they take him to King Saul who at first thought this must be a prank but later agreed to let David go and fight this giant. Now this brings me to today’s topic…"Saul’s armour”. David was presented with the armour of Saul but he wasn’t comfortable in it. 1 Samuel 17:38-39 NLT says “Then Saul gave David his own armor—a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. “I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again.“ I’m sure Saul was thinking is this boy okay? First of all you want to fight a giant, as crazy as that sounds I’m ignoring it. Now you don’t want what I believe can at least protect you a bit. Signs of madness. But do you know the unique part about that? David being able to voice out his concerns.
Most of us are wearing something we are not comfortable in but it’s so hard to speak out. Because of that, we are losing battles that can be easily won if we go in the way we are prepared for. But why?
• Because we don’t want to be judged
• Because we want to fit into the system
• Because we want to be who we are not
As a person, you are aware of your strengths and your weaknesses. Why let someone be your mouthpiece when you can speak for yourself? We tend to always have the fear of what others will think of us than who we know ourselves to be. David automatically won the battle the moment he spoke up. God had prepared him for that moment and he made sure nothing would stop that. He saw that yeah I’m built for this but not in the way everyone expects me to be. I am better off with my stones and sling.
It is better to go with your five stones and sling and fail knowing that you went as you are than to go with Saul’s armour and fail, now regretting the choices you made. The thing is, there might be no going back for you because I am sure with no doubt, if David went with Saul’s armour, he wouldn’t have lived to analysis this.
The funny thing about all of this is that David later wore armours to war. Yes, at the right time. He was trained for it, he became used to it. Do not rush into anything that you could later have access to when you remain patient and are well prepared for. The Bible says in Zechariah 4:10 NLT that
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin….“
Do not abandon the beginning, for that is where you derive your latter strength from. Do not let the pressures of society change you from who you are, what you have been destined for, and where you are assigned to be. May God continue to give us strength and boldness to stand our grounds. May God bless you.
